The Instant Payments Regulation: what just became mandatory in 2026

From the start of 2026, every eurozone bank must offer SEPA Instant transfers at no extra cost. For end users this is quietly a very big deal.

The EU's Instant Payments Regulation (IPR) came fully into effect in early 2026 for payment service providers in the eurozone. In short: every eurozone PSP that offers regular SEPA transfers must now also offer SEPA Instant, and must not charge more for Instant than for regular SEPA. The implications are substantial.

What SEPA Instant actually does

Transfers of up to €100,000 settle in under 10 seconds, 24/7, 365 days a year. No business-day restrictions, no cut-off times, no "we will process this tomorrow". For the recipient, the money is spendable immediately.

Why this is a big deal

For a decade, eurozone bank-to-bank transfers were effectively a 24-to-48-hour affair, with weekends essentially blocking settlement. Payroll on Friday landed Monday. Rent due on the 1st was risky to pay on the 30th. Marketplace sellers waited days to see customer payments. All of this flattens out: salary paid Friday morning is spendable Friday afternoon, including at the till.

What it changes for mandatory confirmation of payee

The same regulation requires providers to show the recipient's registered name back to the sender before the transfer confirms. Mistyped IBANs still happen, but the sender sees "DOES NOT MATCH" before approving — catching fraud and typos that previously only surfaced after the money was gone.

Cost structure

Legacy banks that previously charged €0.50–€2 per Instant transfer must now bundle it into their standard SEPA pricing. Expect some banks to raise their general SEPA pricing slightly to compensate; expect neo-banks (which were already free) to use it as a marketing moment.

Where it does not apply yet

Non-eurozone EU countries have a longer compliance timeline. Non-EU banks accessing SEPA through correspondents can continue to delay. Cross-border transfers above €100k still fall outside Instant and settle via normal SEPA or SWIFT.

Nedsom supports SEPA Instant on every tier at no extra cost. Confirmation of payee is active and shown automatically in the transfer flow.
